So you’ve decided to get your business set up on Facebook! Congratulations. Now let’s talk about promoting your fan pages so you get some fans!

There has already been a post or two about building a fan page. This one is dedicated to promoting those pages.

  • It’s a good idea to run some Facebook ads when you first launch to get some visibility outside of your usual friends network. Spend what you are comfortable with and watch the results carefully. You may need to fine-tune your ad to get just the right message to get people connection
  • Don’t forget to tap into your existing network. They won’t know you build the new page unless you tell them. Use the ‘Suggest to Friends’ feature. Ask them for help spreading the word!
  • Make sure your page is publicly searchable. When you are first building your page it can be in private mode. Make sure you go to edit>settings and make the page public
  • Make regular posts. Every time you post something new to your page it shows up in the news feeds, and every time a fan comments or interacts on your page it goes in their news feed. Give them something to comment on!
  • Create content worth sharing. This means not the usual sales text or re-sharing of other people’s posts. Share information and news they can’t get anywhere else
  • Share videos and webinars. People love to watch these and re-share them with their networks
  • Create content exclusive to your Facebook fan page. This means they have to come to the page to see it, get the offer or enter a contest.
  • Don’t forget to add links to your Facebook fan page on your web site and anywhere else you can think of including your e-mail signature and your profiles on other networks. Help people find it!
  • Use the same SEO (Search Engine Optimization) techniques you use on your regular web site to boost visibility
  • Connect all your other social media sites and web sites to your fan page.
  • Put a link to your fan page in newsletters and emails
  • Be social. Fan other pages that are related to you
  • Comment on related fan pages, forums and blogs and use your URL to your fan page in your signature.
  • Add the Fan Box to your website: The Facebook Fan Box is a snippet of Java Script that will pull the latest friends and posts right onto your website. You can put it on your blog and ask your fans if they want to put it on their site too!
  • Don’t say “Hey I have better information here “link” people will hate you
