I'm a winner!I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had to tell people that running a contest on their Facebook page for likes to win a prize was against their terms of Use and could get their page booted. Imagine my surprise when Facebook finally rolled back their ridiculous 3rd part app requirements! Today they announced they’ve removed the requirement that promotions on Facebook only be administered through apps.

Finally you can do what comes naturally to a small business. Promote your page one to one.

You can now:

  • Collect entries by having users post on the Page or comment/like a Page post
  • Collect entries by having users message the Page
  • Utilize likes as a voting mechanism
  • Ask fans to submit the name of a favorite product, sports team, brand or even color to win a prize.

You still can’t:

  • Tag people or encourage them to tag themselves on your page if they are not actually in the image, but it seems to be OK to run a contest where you post event photos and encourage people to tag themselves to win, for example.
  • Ask people to take part in a  promotion by liking, sharing, or posting  something on their personal Timeline.
  • Ask them to tag a photo they are not in, like products or ads.
